  • 2010 is Here! Ask for Whatsoever!

Grace and peace be unto you. Beloved I am please to announce we are gearing up for our 21 day fast. The 21 day fast is a spiritual exercise we engage in, in the beginning of each year. It is a time of praying and seeking the LORD for direction, guidance and to ask of God, those things we have need of. This is special for a few reasons. Firstly, this is a corporate fast, which means we are doing it together. The main reason for a corporate fast, is that as a church we have corporate needs. We are looking to affect our city and to win all who God have ordained for his Kingdom. Secondly, it is also an opportunity to in prayer as a church pray for each other in a specific and pointed manner. We will talk more specifically about some of the corporate needs as we go along, but know that in the scripture when Israel fasted and prayed corporately, plans were crystallized, and prayers were answered in spectacular ways. I am believing God for the spectacular.
Let me admonish you to get your prayer list together now. Why do we write prayer list? We want to be specific and diligent about what we are praying for. We sometimes will shoot from the hip and get it right Tuesday, but forget what is happening on Thursday. The prayer lists are not just for the big, heavy stuff you want God to do, but also for the mundane. Not only for the simple, but for the incredible as well. Why? Because Jesus said he would answer whatsoever we shall ask, that’s why.
John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

When was the last time you asked God for WHATSOEVER? We many times will ask God for little things. Sometimes because we do not think we should be a bother to God, we refrain from asking God for some things we have convinced ourselves we can not have, or do not deserve. So in fact we place limits on God that do not belong to God because we limit our speech. Your perceived worth is not the determining factor, your speech is. We also limit God’s ability by our net worth. We do not have enough in our bank account to sustain the miracle, so we may as well not ask for it, but Jesus here is saying some rather categoric things. Whatsoever you ask for in my name, is the true limit. If we do not ask for a whatsoever miracle, we can not expect a whatsoever kind of manifestation. If we limit our speech to what you have seen before, then the miracle will be what you have seen before. Take a minute, what in your life would count as a whatsoever miracle? No, that’s to small, come on, really that crazy, incredible WHATSOEVER miracle. The kind that every one around would have to admit, they did not see that coming. Think about it. Now write it on your prayer list, and while we are fasting ask God specifically for WHATSOEVER. For me, it was school. I tried every avenue I could think of to make it happen, and it did not work, I asked God for WHATSOEVER, and not only am I in school, but God made sure it was paid for. So I did not have to finance my WHATSOEVER miracle. Neither do you.

Verse 14 says, if you ask ANYTHING in MY NAME, I will do it. Beloved ask for anything. Of course what you ask for should be that which is in the will of God. The scripture gives it to us this way:
1John 5:14 ¶ And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

So it does not follow that we should ask things that are not in keeping with holiness, but if it is his will, ask for WHATSOEVER you will. I wish I can tackle all of the ramification in one blog, but we have 21 days to talk.

Remember for 21 days, we will drink one bowl of soup, and all the water you can drink. We will start on January 4th and end on the 24th of January 2010. Pray for at least one hour everyday. Pray and seek God for those things on your prayer list. You should actively do some things to remove toxins from your body as you fast. Either a colonic, or enema, or a good laxative. Try to do it at least once a week. Feel free to email me for more instructions, and or comment on this blog.

  • The Kingdom of God (Part 3)

The Kingdom of God (Part 3): “Beloved, grace and peace be unto you, from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. Let’s continue the discussion we started about the Kingdom o God as taught to us by Jesus Christ. Verse 1 told us the Kingdom is a group of people who have a purpose, and go after it. Verses 2 thru 4 define these citizens. Let’s look at the text.

Matt. 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
Matt. 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
Matt. 25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

Of the ten that serve as examples for us, Jesus gives us some details about them. Jesus tells us five were wise, and five were foolish. The first thing this tells me is that it is possible to be in the Kingdom and be foolish. I can be a member of a church in good standing and be a fool. I can also be a part of the kingdom and be wise. Now to benefit from this text, first we should define the term wise. The word wise in the Greek has a few meanings, let’s highlight a few. The word wise here means, intelligent, mindful of one’s interests, thoughtful, i.e. sagacious or discreet (implying a cautious character; while 4680 denotes practical skill or acumen; and 4908 indicates rather intelligence or mental acquirement). The best definition I heard one give of this word is, one who operates with the end in mind.
So the wise believer knows what his or her purpose is, and operates, functions in such a way as to achieve that afore mentioned purpose. For example, if my purpose is to be near the sea, it is unwise, foolish to travel further inland. Once you have read the word of God, sought God through prayer and fasting for direction, and he has answered you concerning your request, it would be foolish to engage in activity, (whatever it is) that does not bring you closer to your goal. Being wise means I must be a thinker. You determine your destination; plot the course, then with malice and aforethought go toward that goal. How you achieve this goal is as important as achieving it.
Those who were wise were wise because they prepared for the journey. The foolish knew what their purpose was but did not prepare. Beloved prepare for your purpose. How do I prepare? In the scripture there is a method of reading scripture called typology. Many things in scripture gives us deeper insight my knowing the symbolism of a thing. Oil in scripture is a type of anointing. Meaning they go hand in hand. Whenever we see anyone being anointed for a task, usually we see oil being applied. So we can read this text this way. Of the ten virgins we see here, the foolish were understood to be foolish because the attempted to achieve their purpose without their anointing. We need God’s anointing to be wise Christians. To often we try to approach the purpose of God like non-Christians. We should not try living this life like Oprah, or thinking the way to achieve the purpose of God is by following Dr. Phil’s advice. Beloved the way to achieve our purpose is to do it God’s way. This is what God requires because God when he appeared, in verse 10, only the wise were allowed in, and Jesus (the bridegroom) shut the door. The best way for us to be shut out of the will, and purpose of God is to try to live out God’s purpose our way.

  • The Kingdom is Like (Part 2)

The Kingdom is Like (Part 2): “Beloved, Grace and Peace be unto you from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. This week I would like to continue to look at the Kingdom of God. Let’s continue the text we started two weeks ago. Matthew 25:1 states this: Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
Jesus is giving us intructin as to what we should resemble as members of his Kingdom. We looked last week at what was meant by being a virgin. This week as we look at the latter clause of this verse we see that Jesus tells us that we have a purpose, and the we should carry our lamps. The ten virgins in this parable had a goal. They had one purpose. The purpose was to meet the bridegroom.  It is clear that the scriptures, even Christ refers to himself as the bridegroom; Luke 5:34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bride chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
Luke 5:35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
So we understand that our purpose is to meet Jesus. The scripture declares that this honor is limited to the believers: 1Th. 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
So our purpose is to live in such a way that our life is pleasing to God, that we would walk righteously before him. Everything we do should be with the goal to meet Jesus, to please Jesus, to obey Jesus. So citizens of the Kingdom do have a common goal. Our love for Christ defines us and he sets the bar in this regard. He says: John 14:15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Beloved Jesus also shares another key characteristic of the Kingdom. The citizen of the Kingdom of God, not only is a virgin, and has a goal, but also carries a lamp. This is key. The purpose for a lamp is to see your way in the dark. So Jesus is telling us, beloved that we should not confine our goal to meet him only in the convenience of daylight. We should be prepared to move toward our purpose even when night falls. In other words, nighttime can be an inconvenient time to travel, but God does not call us to convenience. He has called us to diligence. Just because it is hard to see, does not mean we have the right to give up. We cannot wait for a convenient time to be righteous.
We must diligently seek him, Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
We must diligently hear his voice: Deut. 28:1 ¶ And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
Be diligent in your obedience to God. Keep your lamp with you. There will be times when it will not be easy to do right, but you can do it. You belong to Christ, and you are what God says you are.

  • The Brandon in Me

The Brandon in Me: “Beloved, grace and peace be unto to you, from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. Today I am sending you a story that was sent to me by Pastor Taylor. Thank you Pastor. I do not know the author, but the story ministered to me, so I though I would send to all of you. Please enjoy, and next week we will continue with our blog on the Kingdom of God.

Six-year-old Brandon decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes. He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor. He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Brandon was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad.

He didn’t know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove and he didn’t know how the stove worked! Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky. And just then he saw Dad standing at the door big crocodile tears welled up in Brandon’s eyes. All he’d wanted to do was something good, but he’d made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But his father just watched him. Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process!

That’s how God deals with us… We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess. Our marriage gets all sticky or we insult a
Friend, or we can’t stand our job, or our health goes sour. Sometimes we just stand there in tears because we can’t think of anything else to do. That’s when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him. But just because we might mess up, we can’t stop trying to ‘make pancakes’ for God or for others. Sooner or later we’ll get it right, and then they’ll be glad we tried…

I was thinking and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that need rekindling or three words needing to be said.
Sometimes, ‘I love you’ can heal & bless! Remind every one of your friends that you love them. Even if you think they don’t love back, you would be amazed at what those three little words, a smile, and a reminder like this can do.

  • The Kingdom is Like

Leo ColonThe Kingdom is Like: “Beloved, it is good to write to you once again.  Please forgive the lapse in writing to you. The LORD has impress upon me to redouble my efforts to keep this portion of the ministry a constant. So I will obey the LORD and do my level best to keep the devotional at the very least a weekly event. Pray for me.
Today, I want to keep speaking of our place in the kingdom of God. Jesus gives us a lot of instruction as to who we are in the Kingdom, and how we are to operate in the kingdom. I contend that our knowledge of how we are to comport ourselves, as children of the kingdom will benefit us in ways we are as yet unaware of. Let us look to the word of God.
In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus teaches some valuable lessons. Matt. 25:1 ¶ Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
There are three things to take away from this verse. We need to resemble virgins, have our lamps, and go to meet the bridegroom. What is a virgin in this context? There are several meanings. Of course the one, which comes to mind immediately, is, a man or a woman who has never engaged in sexual activity. In the Greek there is another meaning. In the original a virgin is defined as a marriageable woman.  Someone is eligible for marriage because he or she understood what was required to remain eligible, and with diligence keep his or her vow to God to remain eligible for marriage. In short, those who are called to be a part of the kingdom know what God expects of us, because his word informs us how to be righteous before him, and we diligently adhere to the word. It does not mean we are perfect, but it does mean we work at being what God wants us to be. Think about it, no one is a virgin by accident. It takes a mindset to abstain, and for us it even means we have to fight our own natural instincts but we do it. Jesus tells us that we are not righteous because we never had a wrong thought, or the wrong urge. We are righteous because we know what is right, and do our level best to be righteous before him.
You say to yourself, I have never been marriageable. I have had to deal with sin, which would make me unfit to marry the bridegroom. You are correct; as a matter of fact when you came to God you were unfit. But here is what the Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians. Eph. 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
We are acceptable. We are marriageable. We are because he made us that way. You are what you are because of the love of God. His love has made you, what even your best intention could not. Righteousness has been given to you, and now you are a part of his Kingdom. So what do we take away from this today? I know what God expects of me, and that is for me to remain eligible for him. Go through the week encouraged, knowing who you are and whom you belong to. This knowledge helps you to remain the virgin in the sight of God. Peter reminds us: Acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Next week we will continue to look at this vital teaching from Jesus. Be encouraged, you can do it, because God said, you are more than a conquer through him that loves you (Romans 8:37).

  • The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God: “Beloved, Grace and Peace be unto you from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. Happy Memorial Day. I hope you had a safe and wonderful weekend. It is always appropriate to take time out to salute, and honor those men and women who put their lives on the line for our country, The United States of America. Even if you do not stand in agreement with the present course of our country, the men and women of our Armed Forces, stand in the gap so that you have the right to disagree. So to them we say thank you, and may the LORD bless you.
Allow me in today’s blog to get a little political. I want to encourage you to be Kingdom minded. I have not done much writing about the Kingdom. I have been preaching about the Kingdom of God, just about exclusively for the year of 2009. We at IHP have been really enjoying what we have learned from the Word of God, about his Kingdom. Jesus preached, taught and admonished us all to behave in such a way as to be identified with the KINGDOM. All over the scriptures Jesus confronted the Jewish community not about forms of polity in the synagogue, but about the Kingdom of God. What is that? The word Kingdom can best be explained as the rule, or the paradigm of. Let’s take a look quickly at the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark. The first eight verses introduce John the Baptist. The scripture foretold of his coming, how is ministry did well in the wilderness. Even spoke about what kind of clothe he wore. Then in verse nine, Mark introduces Jesus as he comes to be baptized. In verse 14, we find out that John goes to jail, and Jesus begins to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Jesus preaching to the Jewish community, begins to preach the Gospel (good news) of the Kingdom (paradigm, rule) of God. Listen to what Jesus said to the religious community of Jews. Let me make this observation, I am not one of those who see religion as a bad word. Being a Christian is being religious. Religion means
. So believing in God means we are religious. Some preachers have change religion to mean a person who knows the rules, but has no relationship. I reject that meaning.
In verse fifteen look at what he says to a community, that as a habit, attends worship services. Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is scandalous. To say this to the believing community, is at the very least harsh. Here is how it is rendered in the New Living Translation. Mark 1:15 ‘At last the time has come!’ he announced. ‘The Kingdom of God is near! Turn from your sins and believe this Good News!’ If the point is not made yet, let’s take a look at the same verse in the Message bible (which I am not a fan of). Mark 1:15 ‘Time’s up! God’s kingdom is here. Change your life and believe the Message.’

Here is my point. The message of the Kingdom is not going to be a welcomed message. Imagine someone coming into your church, where you worship every week. This preacher has not been informed of your mind set, nor of your giving habits, nor of your willingness to obey your leaders, yet he comes in and makes this statement. Why? Admittedly the Jewish community does have a relationship with God. The community certainly has a rich history with God. Most of the inhabitants of whatever region they occupy will attest they are a pious people, concern with the things of God. Yet Jesus brings this cutting message.
Jesus says to them in a bold manner, you cannot continue in this form of faith, and believe in systems of law, and expect God to affirm you. This will no longer work, because a new day has arrived. God is saying, your ability to follow laws is duly noted, but God is calling for more. Why? You can follow God’s law, and not repent of sins. You can follow laws, and not change your life. You can follow laws, and not believe Gods word. Many people do it in our churches. I believe God enough to dress appropriately for Sunday Worship, but Tithing takes another kind of faith. I can certainly teach Sunday school, but treating my wife, like the gift of God, takes another kind of faith. Certainly I can head a committee or two, but submitting to my husband is entirely a misinterpretation of Holy Writ.
Jesus invites us to think differently about who we are, and what we are doing. We are not just members of a local church, we are subjects of the Kingdom Of God, and that requires more of us than just a Sunday attitude. The Kingdom of God is at hand. This week let’s take a little bit of a look of what Kingdom means. I travel a great deal. I am constantly on the road doing music somewhere. Many times it takes me out of the United States. The Kingdom I come from defines me. For example, if I get into trouble, I understand that in America, I have the right to one phone call. In America where ever I am, I understand that to be the norm. If I get into trouble in Japan, I will ask for my phone call. The Constitution of Japan, may not afford me that right, but the fact that I am an American will cause me to ask for, even demand my phone call. If that is not what is done there, I will expect them to accommodate me, because of the Kingdom I come from. So many times, we can tell what Kingdom you come from, based on your behavior. What Kingdom do people think you come from? Does your behavior make it clear that you are of the Kingdom of God, or are you hiding your nationality? When an issue on your job comes up, and an opinion is offered that is politically correct, but not part of the Kingdom mindset, do you blend in? Having a Kingdom mindset is definable. Jesus is requiring us to behave like Christians, and not just look like one. Repent, which is entirely different from saying you’re sorry, it means to change your ways. Also, believe what Jesus says is right. These are requirements of Kingdom Living.
We can no longer behave like the Jews of that time, and cling to our family tree, our opinion of ourselves, or our affiliation. We cannot fool ourselves into thinking, well I am Baptist, or Episcopal, or Pentecostal. Nor can we convince ourselves that because I am a deacon, or a trustee, or a Pastor that we are immune from scrutiny. Being a part of the Kingdom means obeying our King, and beloved his name is Jesus. Next week, let’s take a closer look at what being a part of the kingdom is like.

  • Your Purpose.

Your Purpose.: “Beloved, Grace and Peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus Christ our LORD. Allow me to apologize to you for the gap in our weekly devotional, I will do my level best not to allow that to happen again.
Today I want to encourage you about your purpose, and take a look at how Jesus went about doing the will of the Father. This is increasingly important today because we live in a time when many non-Christians are yelling at the top of their voices that we should be tolerant, but if we have the occasion to state our positions as believers we are admonished to keep our faith a personal issue between us, and God. Certainly, that’s intolerant in my book. Hear is what Jesus has to say about who we are and our purpose.
John 15:5 ¶ ‘Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:6 Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.
    NLT Version.

We beloved are branches. The purpose of a branch is to bear fruit, or in the NLT version, to produce fruit. The fruit is define thusly: 1 the sweet and fleshy product of a tree or other plant that contains seed and can be eaten as food. A further definition of fruit, is that the seed it contains can and does produce fruit after it’s own kind. So the apple is a fruit, and has in it seed that can and does when planted, produce an apple trees. One seed produces one tree, that in turn yields a multiplicity of friut. So Jesus is really telling us to reproduce what is in you. The only way to effectively do this is to be a witness. Being a witness, according to the scripture takes power. Jesus says it this way:Acts 1:8 But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’

Here, the word ‘power’ in the greek is the word, du/namiß; dunamis, this is where we get the word dynamite. The word means raw force. Jesus is telling us we need raw force, power to tell people about him. Why? Jesus says it this way: John 3:19 Their judgment is based on this fact: The light from heaven came into the world, but they loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

It is preferable for man today to do everything contrary to the will of God. Why? The Apostle Paul tells us in the book of Romans: Rom. 8:7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. The light you offer is an offense to them, and they will reject it. I still want to encourage you. The light you offer is more powerful than their need to be in the dark. God has given you the raw force to deal with their objection, but you can not use this power by remaining quiet. You must speak, you must confront, you must take a stand, you must be a witness. How did Jesus do it? He went about preaching and teaching about the Kingdom. Make the Kingdom of God the focus. You derive benefits because you are in the Kingdom of God. Life has it’s challenge, but the reason you are not crazy, is because you are a citizen of the Kingdom of God. The reason you have not given up, although you have good reason is because you are a citizen of the Kingdom of God, and he takes care of you. Tell people about the Kingdom, tell them about Jesus. Invite someone to church with you.

  • God can make you.

God can make you.: “Mark 1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
Mark 1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
Mark 1:18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
Mark 1:19 And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
Mark 1:20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

Is Mankind important enough, to leave what you know, for what God can make you? This is a question for us to ponder this week.

Beloved, Grace and Peace be unto you, from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. Today I want to encourage you. One of the things we are learning in catechism, is that the bible gives us instructions with regard to what God requires of us as believers. God is not some Santa Claus that just offers us goodies, with out some commitment to him, and his truths. God requires us to behave a certain way, and requires us to undertake certain duties. We are consistently challenged to share our faith with the world. In today’s passage, we see the commitment believers are expected to have, when it comes to sharing Christ with men. In other words, we see how important it is to God, that man be reached. In this narrative, Simon and Andrew were fishing. This was their livelihood, their careers. This was how they provided for their families, and themselves, and we know the at least Peter, (here named Simon) had a wife. So this was important work for them, yet Jesus saw them and said come and follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Now you would think that when people are busy building a business, just because some one comes along and says hey come with me, it would not be normal for people to just leave there livelihood. I really don’t think that it would be reasonable to believe the offer was attractive because they wanted to change careers. The thing that was so important for them to leave their careers was the opportunity to advance the Kingdom of God. Now I am not saying that the first opportunity to leave your job to work in a church is your cue to make a move. But we can say this, the Kingdom of God is so important to these men, that they recognize a legitimate opportunity to make a difference. Mankind is important enough to do whatever Christ says he wants you to do. Also by any stretch of the imagination, this was a radical commitment to the cause of Christ. I will make you fishers of men. This was the pivotal statement. Come with me, and I will afford you the opportunity to affect a positive change in the hearts and minds of man. This was so awesome an opportunity, they left their careers on the spot.
What are you willing to do, if Christ wanted you to affect the hearts and minds of your community. Are you bold enough to leave what you know, for what God wants, all to affect mankind. God can use what you know, but more important than that, God wants your obedience. Why? Because we need to operate with the knowledge that our ability to be used by God is not limited to what we know. Listen to the invitation. I will make you fishers of men. God can make you whatever is necessary to get the job done. Even if you do not know what it will take to be successful, God has the ability to make you what you need to be. Be bold in sharing your faith. Be what God wants you to be, not just what you know. Allow yourself to be stretched into the new thing God has in store for you. God is more than what you know, he is infinite, and eternal. He is able to make you a fisher of men.

This Saturday, God has us schedule to do street ministry. I look forward to seeing you all there at 11:00AM to meet Kwania for prayer. I will see you all for bible study/catechism tonight.

Don’t Leave It On The Desk: “Beloved, Grace and peace be unto you, from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. This week I wanted to share a powerful story that Pastor Donna sent to me. I need you all to read this. It really crystallized the importance of sharing our faith, and confronting this world with the person of Jesus Christ. We are scheduled to do street ministry again this Saturday. Again this Saturday, it scheduled to rain. As you know I will not ask you to stay in the street during the rain. So if we know that it will rain, then we will be on the street. Remember to invite someone to church, and experience the LORD as we did on last Sunday. I am looking for the LORD to do it again, Remember, commit to bring at least one person with you to church on Sunday. Now, please read this story.

*DON’T LEAVE IT ON THE DESK*

There was a certain Professor of Religion named Dr. Christianson, a studious man, who taught at a small college in the western United States . Dr. Christianson taught the required survey course in Christianity at this particular institution. Every student was required to take this course his freshman year, regardless of his or her major.

Although Dr. Christianson tried hard to communicate the essence of the gospel in his class, he found that most of his students looked upon the course as nothing but required drudgery. Despite his best efforts, most students refused to take Christianity seriously.

This year, Dr. Christianson had a special student named Steve. Steve was only a freshman, but was studying with the intent of going onto seminary for the ministry. Steve was popular, well liked, and he was an imposing physical specimen. He was now the starting center on the school football team, and was the best student in the professor’s class.

One day, Dr. Christianson asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him.

‘How many push-ups can you do?’

Steve said, ‘I do about 200 every night.’

‘200? That’s pretty good, Steve,’ Dr. Christianson said. ‘Do you think you could do 300?’

    Steve replied, ‘I don’t know…. I’ve never done 300 at a time.’

‘Do you think you could?’ again asked Dr. Christianson.

‘Well, I can try,’ said Steve.

‘Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I have a class project in mind and I need you to do about 300 push-ups in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me if you can do it,’ said the professor.

    Steve said, ‘Well… I think I can…yeah, I can do it.’

Dr. Christianson said, ‘Good! I need you to do this on Friday. Let me explain what I have in mind.’

Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room. When class started, the professor pulled out a big box of donuts. No, these weren’t the normal kinds of donuts, they were the extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls. Everyone was pretty excited it was Friday, the last class of the day, and they were going to get an early start on the weekend with a party in Dr. Christianson’s class.

Dr.. Christianson went to the first girl in the first row and asked, ‘Cynthia, do you want to have one of these donuts?’

    Cynthia said, ‘Yes.’

Dr. Christianson then turned to Steve and asked, ‘Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?’

‘Sure..’ Steve jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten. Then Steve again sat in his desk. Dr. Christianson put a donut on Cynthia’s desk.

Dr. Christianson then went to Joe, the next person, and asked, ‘Joe, do you want a donut?’

Joe said, ‘Yes.’ Dr. Christianson asked, ‘Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?’

Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut. And so it went, down the first aisle, Steve did ten push-ups for every person before they got their donut.

Walking down the second aisle, Dr. Christianson came to Scott. Scott was on the basketball team, and in as good condition as Steve. He was very popular and never lacking for female companionship.

When the professor asked, ‘Scott, do you want a donut?’

Scott’s reply was, ‘Well, can I do my own push-ups?’

Dr. Christianson said, ‘No, Steve has to do them.’

Then Scott said, ‘Well, I don’t want one then.’

Dr. Christianson shrugged and then turned to Steve and asked, ‘Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Scott can have a donut he doesn’t want?’

With perfect obedience Steve started to do ten push-ups.

Scott said, ‘HEY! I said I didn’t want one!’

Dr. Christianson said, ‘Look! this is my classroom, my desks, and these are my donuts. Just leave it on the desk if you don’t want it.’ And he put a donut on Scott’s desk.

Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to be getting up and down. You could start to see a little perspiration coming out around his brow.

Dr. Christianson started down the third row. Now the students were beginning to get a little angry. Dr. Christianson asked Jenny, ‘Jenny, do you want a donut?’

    Sternly, Jenny said, ‘No.’

Then Dr. Christianson asked Steve, ‘Steve, would you do ten more push-ups so Jenny can have a donut she doesn’t want?’

Steve did ten….Jenny got a donut.

By now, a growing sense of uneasiness filled the room. The students were beginning to say ‘No’ and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks.

Steve also had to really put forth a lot of extra effort to get these push-ups done for each donut.
There began to be a small pool of sweat on the floor beneath his face, his arms and brow were beginning to get red because of the physical effort involved.

Dr. Christianson asked Robert, who was the most vocal unbeliever in the class, to watch Steve do each push up to make sure he did the full ten push-ups in a set because he couldn’t bear to watch all of Steve’s work for all of those uneaten donuts. He sent Robert over to where Steve was so Robert could count the set and watch Steve closely.

Dr. Christianson started down the fourth row. During his class, however, some students from other classes had wandered in and sat down on the steps along the radiators that ran down the sides of the room. When the professor realized this, he did a quick count and saw that now there were 34 students in the room. He started to worry if Steve would be able to make it.

Dr. Christianson went on to the next person and the next and the next. Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time. He was taking a lot more time to complete each set.

Steve asked Dr. Christianson, ‘Do I have to make my nose touch on each one?’

Dr. Christianson thought for a moment, ‘Well, they’re your push-ups. You are in charge now. You can do them any way that you want.’ And Dr. Christianson went on.

A few moments later, Jason, a recent transfer student, came to the room and was about to come in when all the students yelled in one voice, ‘NO! Don’t come in! Stay out!’

Jason didn’t know what was going on. Steve picked up his head and said, ‘No, let him come.’

Professor Christianson said, ‘You realize that if Jason comes in you will have to do ten push-ups for him?’

Steve said, ‘Yes, let him come in. Give him a donut’

Dr. Christianson said, ‘Okay, Steve, I’ll let you get Jason’s out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?’

Jason, new to the room, hardly knew what was going on. ‘Yes,’ he said, ‘give me a donut.’

‘Steve, will you do ten push-ups so that Jason can have a donut?’

Steve did ten push-ups very slowly and with great effort. Jason, bewildered, was handed a donut and sat down.

Dr. Christianson finished the fourth row, and then started on those visitors seated by the heaters. Steve’s arms were now shaking with each push-up in a struggle to lift himself against the force of gravity. By this time, sweat was profusely dropping off of his face, there was no sound except his heavy breathing; there was not a dry eye in the room.

The very last two students in the room were two young women, both cheerleaders, and very popular. Dr. Christianson went to Linda, the second to last, and asked, ‘Linda, do you want a doughnut?’

Linda said, very sadly, ‘No, thank you.’

Professor Christianson quietly asked, ‘Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn’t want?’

Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow push-ups for Linda.

Then Dr. Christianson turned to the last girl, Susan. ‘Susan, do you want a donut?’

Susan, with tears flowing down her face, began to cry. ‘Dr. Christianson, why can’t I help him?’

Dr. Christianson, with tears of his own, said, ‘No, Steve has to do it alone, I have given him this task and he is in charge of seeing that everyone has an opportunity for a donut whether they want it or not. When I decided to have a party this last day of class, I looked at my grade book. Steve here is the only student with a perfect grade. Everyone else has failed a test, skipped class, or offered me inferior work. Steve told me that in football practice, when a player messes up he must do push-ups. I told Steve that none of you could come to my party unless he paid the price by doing your push ups. He and I made a deal for your sakes.’

‘Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Susan can have a donut?’

As Steve very slowly finished his last push-up, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, having done 350 push-ups, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.

Dr. Christianson turned to the room and said. ‘And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, pleaded to the Father, ‘into thy hands I commend my spirit.’ With the understanding that He had done everything that was required of Him, He yielded up His life. And like some of those in this room, many of us leave the gift on the desk, uneaten.’

Two students helped Steve up off the floor and to a seat, physically exhausted, but wearing a thin smile.

‘Well done, good and faithful servant,’ said the professor, adding ‘Not all sermons are preached in words.’

Turning to his class, the professor said, ‘My wish is that you might understand and fully comprehend all the riches of grace and mercy that have been given to you through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He spared not only His Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us all, for the whole Church, now and forever. Whether or not we choose to accept His gift to us, the price has been paid.’

‘Wouldn’t you be foolish and ungrateful to leave it lying on the desk?’

Share this with someone. It’s bound to touch their heart and demonstrate Salvation in a very special way.

  • Reading the Scriptures

    Reading the Scriptures: ”
Mark 12:18 ¶ Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,
Mark 12:19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Mark 12:20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
Mark 12:21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.
Mark 12:22 And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.
Mark 12:23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
Mark 12:24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?

Grace and peace be unto you from God our Father, and from the LORD Jesus Christ. Beloved, today I would like to take a little time to talk about the Holy Habit of Bible Reading. The text that we are looking at is an interesting one to discuss this topic. Why is bible reading important? Well question 2 of the Westminster Catechism, asks ‘what rule has God given us to know how we may glorify and enjoy God?’ Now for those who have never read the catechism the first question asks basically what is our purpose. To this we get our chief end is to glorify and enjoy God. Now that we know our purpose is to glorify and enjoy him, the next question posed is what rule, or some would say canon, is there that teaches us how to do this properly? The answer returns, the only rule is the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament. That being said, reading the bible is important for no other reason than it is all we have to direct us in our pursuit to honor God, the way He wants to be honored. We learned in the scriptures that the bible is profitable for us to learn doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction unto righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16) From this passage in Paul’s epistle we learn that when we want to learn Christian Doctrine, reprove anyone, correct anyone, or instruct anyone, the bible is the only tool we can use.

In this passage we find some awesome facts by which we can make some powerful observations. The context is this, the sadducees came to Jesus, and began to ask a question. In the question they laid out a hypothetical context. The answer they expected for this question would have allowed the sadducees to mock him, maybe even call into question his scholarship in matters of doctrine. As a matter of fact the text tells us, the premise on which they proffer the question was on the resurrection. The resurrection is an idea they do not believe in. Many times people will literally challenge your fidelity to God and his word, by posing a position they do not believe in themselves. So by process of elimination, we know that the sadducees were not looking for clarification of the position. Jesus did not fall for it. He took the time to make them aware of their folly. What do I mean. He said to them ‘Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?’ The mistake we make beloved in forming opinions many times in our own lives is that we do not know the scriptures or the power of God. Why is this an issue? The sadducees were asking Jesus a question that they thought should be approached by logic. Of course logic would be necessary for them to reach a valid conclusion, because this issue of resurrection is one they did not believe in. Beloved what they did is take part of the scripture, and try to formulate a hypothesis from its logical conclusion. With God we must base any position from the word of God. Not an excerpt. Remember, 2 Tim 3:16. If we want instruction in righteousness, we need all scripture. Jesus said their lack of knowledge of the word, makes their question moot. Also they have no basis for understanding the answer, or arriving at the correct answer because they do not know the power of God. Either, familiarity with the word of God, or with the power of God will always answer your questions correctly. Paul said it this way, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
It would seem that the word of God,(the gospel) is the power of God. Jesus makes the point that knowledge of God’s word gives us answers that logic can not. The prophet Isaiah says it this way:
Is. 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Is. 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

We need to read God’s word to get answers to our questions. Having questions are not a problem, not getting the right, the Godly answers lead to ruin. Why?
Hos. 4:6 ¶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Beloved, knowledge of God’s word leads to power, operating without it leads to destruction. I want power, the question is, what do you want? Read the scriptures. Make time for the power of God to operate in your life.

Remember, bring someone to church with you. Invite someone to church. Also the podcast of Sunday’s message is on the website.
